When the Asian Financial Crisis hit in 1997, it exposed the vulnerabilities of emerging

markets’ financial frameworks. These countries then turned to the US and other western

economies for advice and expertise on how to manage through it. Ten years later, we are

grappling with a US-based financial crisis, drawing attention to the shortcomings of the US

model. How should emerging markets cope with the increasingly complex international

financial circumstances? What new financial architecture should be put in place to prevent

similar crises? What is the role of emerging markets in it?
